blog is short for "web log" and as you've surmised, is indeed a diary.

Mine is called Reenie the Inbetweenie and tells of all the random rubbish that goes on in my life. It proves I've got nothing better to do when I'm not writing up my blog...

It doesn't have to be daily. Some update more often than others. Just whenever you have news or feel the need to say something.
