'Grissom is called to a reservoir, where a young man has been found hanging from a tree, with lacerations on his chest. His physical appearance and elevated oestrogen level suggest that he was preparing for a sex-change op - a suggestion his mother vehemently denies. Soon, the contents of a fisherman's freezer divulge an unexpected twist.'

I'll have to make sure I tape that one then; I've missed the last few weeks of CSI Sad

Some people complain that CSI doesn't portray trans characters very favourably (The episode "Ch-ch-changes" and the story arc about Millander springing to mind), but they forget that neither do they paint most cisgendered characters in a positive light. The show is, after all, about catching murderers, rapists and the like. To not have any trans characters at all would not be representative, surely?

As for the twist, my bet's on him being FtM rather than MtF, hence the chest lacerations. Having said that, my track record of guessing CSI endings is not good Exclamation

I have never watched CSI before, but this has interested me, so I found the episode on wikipedia. I am pretty sure I know what is going on in the episode, but it has left me with enough doubt and curiosity that I want to watch it. Its like some kind of conspiracy.

I dont know if it was CSI, but it was one of those style programs on Five. I remember that there was one episode where the villan was a transwoman who gets guilt tripped for transitioning by her ex-CO at the end before he shoots her in the head.
Then there was the other one where the managed to mistake a clown for a transexual. Rolling Eyes
Pleasant stuff...

For those of you who wanted to see it but missed it, you can watch it on the C5 website "On Demand" service. I know this; I have a partner who's completely addicted to CSI! I meant to ask her about last night's episode, but I forgot - must try and remember to ask her tonight.

Alan, I couldn't agree more! And if they made all the trans characters "goodies", it would smack of tokenism, in the same way that it would if they made all the black people goodies. I don't watch CSI very often, but from what I have seen it seems to promote a positive agenda towards diversity in many forms, including trans issues.

Ok since you asked nicely Very Happy.

Warning Spoilers

The town where the "trans" kid (called Brian) lived was next to a water treatment reservoir. The reservoir was divided into two bits, an upper bit that contained safe ground water, and an underneath bit that had treated water (called "grey" water) that was used for washing car and watering gardens, etc, but was not safe to drink.

A retired hydrologist called Paul Cyden, believed that the the "grey" water was leaking into the ground water, making it unsafe to drink, so he hired Brian, who worked at the treatment plant to get samples of the water from the treatment plant and the ground water. Paul then started exposing carp to the water and monitoring their hormone levels, and discovered there was so much estrogen in the water that they had become intersexed.

Brain's hormone levels (when the CSI people tested them it looked like was under going HRT) had been messed up by the water, causing his body to be feminised (which had caused him to become very depressed), which is why he had breasts. On the night he was found dead, he had been drinking next to the lake, and was then joined by two guys and two girls. They put a rope in a nearby tree and started the swing and jump into the water. During this Brain jumped into water, he t-shirt got wet and the others could see he had breasts, and started laughing at him. He ran off, and came back later, and cut his breats with a broken beer bottle and hung himself from the rope.

The CSI people throught that Paul had been giving hormones to Brain, or paying him for sex (then found a load of money in Brains room). When Brain's mum found out she killed Paul. The CSI team eventually worked out what was going on and told Brian's mum, who was dieing of cancer because of the water.

Wow, that was longer than I thought it would be. I remember learning about this type of thing in A-level biology.

EDIT: spelling mistake.

For anyone who missed it yesterday and wants to watch it, my TV guide says it's being repeated tonight on Five US (Freeview channel 35) at 9pm.

I didn't want to be the spoiler on this episode of CSI. One of the local rivers around Washington DC (in the Shenandoah valley of Virginia) has been effected in a way similar to the programme, in that inter-sexed fish have been caught. The postulated explanation has been that bovine growth hormones (or something with poultry) is causing stream run off which effects the fish.
