Hi

I know this is generalising but does anyone have any opinions or experience that suggests GPs of a certain age or gender are more open and more respecting of transgendered folk. The reason I ask is because I have to get myself a new GP as I recently moved and if I have a choice I would like it to be an informed one.

BB

I think it's luck of the draw, but you can always change GP if they're unhelpful.

A younger GP might be unsure of the issues and procedures with regards to those "transgendered" peeps and therefore unwilling to put their career on the line by making an uninformed decisions.

My doctor was a relatively old male, I had seen him once before for an unrelated issue, and from his manner I was convinced I would have to change my GP when I went to talk to him about this, but I was totally wrong!! I don't think there are generalisations you can make about whether a doctor will be helpful based on their age or gender.

By the way, I was really worked up about seeing my GP but in actual fact the appointment was very short, I wasn't interrogated, my doctor just agreed to refer me and in my case asked me to write a letter. Have a peek in the other GP thread on here for a few people's experiences, if you didn't already!

I'd suggest writing to the practice manager of your local surgery and ask who might be most suitable to deal with your case.

Also, contact the gender clinic.

I asked the Sandyford if they knew anyone local to where I lived and they found me a doctor who has already seen someone else through transition.

Well I did say "might", you have to remember that while qualifications come from uni/college/school, experience only comes with age and as with any profession, uninformed mistakes can cost someone their job.
