Hi everyone

I thought it might be interesting to see how the people who use this forum would describe themselves so I've added a poll.

The results should let us all know what percentage of each group visit the site.

I've put in as many options as I can think of but if there is an option I've missed that you feel describes you then please add a response to say what that is.

It would also be interesting if you can add a response to say why you identify the way you do.

Many of us will identify with more than one of these options, I know I do, but just put the one which you think describes you best.

This isn't meant to be too serious, I'm not trying to put people in boxes! Wink

Right now I'd say I'm intersexed but after some surgical rearranging I don't think I'd pick any of the options Smile .

Looking at the options, they are all the branding thats used by the medical profession, and well, I suppose the only way I see myself is female........though if I were forced to use the medical branding then I would use the "Transsexual MtF"

I'm not keeping the fact I am a MtF transsexual a secret, I'm not shouting about it on top of the rooftops either, lol. I think unfortunately most people can see some masculinity in my appearance and guess most people would guess I am a transsexual. I don't feel ashamed of being trans in anyway or proud of being trans for that matter, it is simply just a fact.

I wish someday I could be at a point where people could not tell that I am trans. I dream of being seen as just another woman. In that situation I wouldn't probably get asked if I were trans so I would have no need to tell. I guess if friends I meet in the future ask me then I doubt I would lie to them especially if they are good friends.

Well I clicked the Transsexual FTM one. Although I wouldnt refer to myself as transsexual cus I dont like that word. I chose it just cus it had FTM in it which is what I would call myself if I was in a situation were I needed to explain etc.

I agree with u there Mike, I don't like the word Transsexual either. It was the only definitive term I could think of.
I guess most people prefer the term Transgender now but that covers a lot more options.
I tried to include an option for 'Other' but it got missed off somehow. Maybe I put in too many options...

I would still describe myself as 'transgender', or, to avoid confusing people, 'tomboy', or I'm 'kind of like an extreme tomboy'.

Even if I choose not to undergo transition or be called by a male name, etc., the fact that I am transgender cannot be completely ignored - that is who - or what - I am.

That's kind of what I feel about myself.

*nods*, yeah I see where you're coming from.

I selected 'genderqueer' 'cause there wasn't a 'questioning' category which is probably what I fit into. Thought genderqueer was the closest I could get.

I mean.. I wouldn't say I'm confused or anything.. I'd just say 'I'm me' and I'm not in a hurry to work anything out/transition because I'm me regardless or whether I have breasts or a dick..

I'm just questioning because I'm not sure if I want hormones etc when I'm older.

i usually describe myself by using my first name. if you want to know my gender i'll call myself a woman. if you want to know a bit more about my gender and it's history i'll call myself a transsexual woman or, a little bit more casually, a transwoman. i have to admit, i *hate* the term MtF with a passion and everytime somebody uses it i cringe. i simply can't stand being reduced to an acronym. it feels so impersonal. on the other hand, i don't really have a great deal of bother with being called a transsexual woman, because i'm not somebody who thinks the two terms are mutually exclusive.

i'll also admit.... i get annoyed with other transsexual folk who, when speaking to them, continually ask me, 'oh, so-and-so is MtF / FtM then' and won't simply accept that i'm giving them *all* the information they need by saying 'so-and-so is a transwoman / transman'. plus, hello, even if you're transsexual i feel awkward outing people to you. it's not any of our business, tranniehood or no.

however, nowadays i do my best to not use gender to describe myself or other people at all.

i personally prefer the term female bodied man to female to male ts as i was never female and never will be.

IMO everyone is intersexed to a certain extent. and gender is not black and white in the first place but a sliding scale.

Interesting point. Maybe the poll options were far too limiting.

I know my own feelings of gender have moved back & forth along that scale.

I should have included an option for 'GENDERFLUID'. Is there such a word?!

Surprised

I picked 'androgyne', but there's not really a word that I know that fits me. Guys and women's behaviour, attitudes etc are interpreted in very different ways, and I'm very uncomfortable being seen as a woman, and looking like a guy is the closest approximation I have to having people interpret who I am in the right way. Being trans is as much about what you are uncomfortable being seen as as it is about how you are comfortable being seen as.

I'd like a totally 'male' body, and look like a guy, so I get classed as an FTM by many. I really enjoy looking 'like a guy', but for me that appearance doesn't have a connotation of being a 'man'. Its just what I like!
