I recieved this reply to my enquiry about obtaining an Irish passport in my real name and gender. Just thought it might be useful if there are any Irish trans people visiting this forum.
--------------------------------------

Dear William

I refer to your enquiry regarding the additional steps needed to obtain
a passport in your new name and gender.

The steps required depend on the stage you are at in the process.

1 in the case of pre operative transsexuals

This involves persons who have been undergoing bona fide medical
treatement towards sex reassignment and who have already reached what
can be described as the transitional, or social reassignment phase of
treatment during which they spend a defined period living full time in
the new gender role in advance of surgery. Normally at this stage you
would have formally changed your name to reflect the new gender role.

The passport issued in this case would be a restricted passport of two
years validity

As well as the normal application form photos and previous passport the
following are required .

A letter from the applicants psychiatrist certifying that the person
concerned has been undergoing medical treatment as outlined above

Treatment has been taking place for a minimum period of 2 years

The person is as of the date of the letter living full time in the new
gender.

The original Deed Poll effecting change of name.

2 Post operative transsexuals

Persons as falling into this category include those people who have
completed a full course of medical treatement , have completed the
necessary period of social reassignment and in addition have undergone
full, irreversible sex reassignment surgery.

Subject to normal passport requirements being met and additional
documentation below being provided the Passport Office will issue full
validity passports in the applicants new name and new sex.

The following additional documents are required

1 a certificate from the applicants psychiatrist certifying that all
stages of reassignment have been satisfactorily completed

2 a certificate from the surgeon who carried out the gender reassignment
surgery that this has been completed and that such surgery is
irreversible

3 the original Deed Poll effecting the change of name.

I hope this is helpful to you .

If you are submitting your application by post i.e. passport Express or
normal post please address your application to the Deputy Passport
Officer as these application are dealt with by such officers .

If you are calling to one of our offices in person Dublin or Cork please
ask to speak to the supervisor at the counter or to the deputy passport
officer in charge of passport applications in private.

If you require any additional information please do not hesitate to
contact me by e-mail or by phone at 01 67633025

Regards

Albert Rattigan

Thank you for that, William. Very useful to see Irish passport requirements laid out so clearly and simply.

On the down side, the letter shews how totally entrenched the medical psychiatric view of the trans estate has become, how difficult it will be for trans folk in the future to reclaim the ground lost to medical apologetics.

have completed the
necessary period of social reassignment and in addition have undergone
full, irreversible sex reassignment surgery.

hmmm well preops in the UK with their new birth certificates turn that over but i guess for such a religious country this is indeed very good news Smile

i'm getting a british passport for now (as no way would i be bothered renewing it every 2 years Confused ). but once i get my GRC and a new birth cert i'll probably get an irish one as i'm proud of my heritage and they'll not know i'm trans Wink

i expect ireland will soon catch up with the uk, but i'm lucky to be a northern lad i guess cos i'm duel nationalitied.

but unfortunately it's bad news for non-op trans citizens of eire as they can't get a new birth cert and so can never get a non-restricted passport Rolling Eyes
