this won't interest everyone but james barret the consultant psychatrist at charing cross has written a book about the treatment of transsexualism and other gender identity disorders.it's aimed at people working with this client group but some patients might find it interesting.
i found it easy to read and learned a few things i didn't know.
rachel

Editor(s): BARRETT James; (ed.);

Its an eds so a compilation it seems

interesting the first positive review is his mate and colleague Lorimar (on amazon) nice guy though

the second review offers

By Ms. S. J. Murray "Sarah J" (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
James Barrett is the Consultant Psychiatrist of the Charing Cross Gender Identity Clinic in the UK. As Charing Cross is regarded as the primary centre in the UK for the treatment of transsexuals one would expect a definitive text.

Unfortunately this book is in no way definitive. Mr Barret demonstrates the psychiatrists ability to observe and categorise with little understanding of internal, external and social influences.

The addition of chapters on all areas of transsexual treatment helps lift it above a general psychiatric text, however there is little in the book that meets the titles promise of "a practical guide to management".

For the professional looking for information on helping transsexuals there are better texts available. For the inquisitive suffering from gender dysphoria this book is best avoided

so it appears biomedical

could you offer a complete review sgian Smile if you have time

this book is aimed at G.P.'Sspeech therapists, endocrinologists, social workers and pyschiatrists.it deals with gender identity disorders of adulthood and not of childhood.
some people might find the classifications of transsexuals as offensive e.g. primary, secondary, homosexual, heterosexual.other disorders of gender identity are covered such as fetishish, transvestitsm, dual role transvestism together with psychatric condition which may be mistaken for gender identity disorders and the problems of treating people with both psychiatric and gender identity disorders existing together.
other areas covered are the real life test and the reactions of parents and partners of transsexuals as well as children.psychotherapeutic interventions are covered together with the importance of speech therapy in helping to acheive a successful transition.
differents hormone regimes are covered for both male to female and female to male transsexuals along with surgical intervention for both groups e.g phalloplasty, mastectomy, breast augmentation, vaginoplasty,CTA surgery.
legal issues are dealt with along with religious issues which influence gender transition and the different attitudes of religions to transsexualism.there is a chapter on transsexuals in the armed forces and different countries reaction to the issue.
there are case histories throughout the bookand the text is easy to read.i have never seen a U.K. text that specifcally addresses gender identity disorders alone so in that respect i think it's welcome.i was disappointed that FFS surgery wasn't discussed although i'm aware this isn't part of the NHS gender package.i found this book interesting as a nurse and transsexual and i think any book that better informs people dealing with gender identity disorders is a good thing.
rachel taylor.
