Hi, to skip past all the details: I've been seen a phycologist for about 6months or so and after alot of talking about my gender we have decided to move forward from just talking. Anyway, She has writen a letter explaining the situation and asking for referral (I have a copy of it infront of my if you want anymore details Rolling Eyes ).

I've read over it and most of it reads well so we are just about to send it off. and thats the problem, I arnt really 100% on where to send it- at the moment its adressed to my GP, and this does sound like the best place to send it, but I asked if I could have a couple of days to ask and make sure before its sent!

Also the last paragraph mentions that I will make an appointment to visit my GP to discuss the contents of this letter, I dont mind doing this, but I wonder if its necessary.

Any insight would be helpful, thanks in advance - Sam

Sounds like the normal way forward from what I know - which is only from reading, not experience. If your GP is unhelpful you might want to change your GP - I've heard of some GP's being more helpful than others.

You will need to speak to your GP in order to continue on through the NHS route. Private I don't know, you may not need to (but probably should) talk to your GP.

Anyway people that actually know stuff will respond soon Wink

It's going to depend on who your psychologist works for, and which route you're looking to take.

In my experience, your GP will simply refer you to the local mental health team, who then makes the referral to the GIC. IF you're already seeing somebody from that team, then there should be no need to go through your GP (which, ideologically, is a good thing). But that's assuming you are going through the NHS.

However, if you wish to go private, then the letter is not necessary. You should simply contact your chosen doctor to arrange an appointment. I mean, sure, send them the letter, and show that you've had lots of time and counselling to think about this, but expect that they will want to talk to you for themselves.
