|
|
I'm doing a research paper as one of my third year modules in drama/performing arts, and im focusing on 'The Third Gender in Performance' im basically looking into cross dressing, androgeny, surgery/ comestic surgery, gender roles and stereotypes transexualism and transvestitism, (amoungst other things) in conjunction with performing arts.
if anyone knows of any contempory performances (1960 onwards) that use these themes, good or bad.. it would be a huge help. at the moment i have people like Orlan, Bornstein's 'Hidden: A Gender' and Caryl Churchill's 'Cloud 9' which all look into stuff surrounding what i'm interested in, but if any one's seen anything recently that struck a chord with them, or something that you thought was rubbish, let me know so i can get a first and piss all my tutors of by doing well!!!
thanks! _________________ Creativity takes it's inspiration from the Tortured Soul

Joe Orton's 1969 play What the Butler Saw contains thematically important cross-dressing.

Have you seen anything by Joey Hateley? He runs a theatre company called TransAction, and has performed a number of shows, including one called A:Gender. I can't find a website for him, but he does have a MySpace page here.
He's performing in Liverpool soon, at the Unity Theatre on Saturday 17th November as part of the Homotopia festival.

I remember seeing a performance of The Importance of Being Ernest at the Watford palace Theatre a few years back. It was notable in that almost the entire cast was cast in the opposite gender, and of course cross-dressing for the role. _________________ The boobs are just a set of metaphors.

You might also want to contact the guys who run Transfabulous, the festival of international transgender arts. The website also has links to quite a few trans and trans-related performers, if that's any use to you.

At the expense of the obvious, Richard O'Briens "The Rocky Horror Show," which premiered at the tiny Royal Court Theatre Upstairs in 1973, contains a great deal of light-weight trans exotica.

Elliott, you'll notice I've edited my post above, because it's all such a long time ago, that I may have mis-remembered the details.
