OK, I didn't find him that funny before, but he's certainly done himself no favours with that "sketch". In fact, I'd go so far as to call it a huge anti-favour.
And aside from the obvious trans-phobic rubbish, he couldn't even be bothered to get the Stephen Hawking stuff right (as a physicist, this annoys me greatly! )
1) It's HawkING, not HawkINS, and
2) It's Professor Chair to morons like him.

I do find him funny mostly. I have to say I laughed a little bit even at this, as well as being offended. I've always used humour as a defence mechanism - laughing people are not usually attacking at the same time. Laughter makes me feel safe. I can withstand mockery but fear violence. I did chortle at the 'wait around for the same guy to re-offened' RE the Saudi Arabian hands...
I didn't notice the Hawking/s but I did notice the dr/prof mistake.
He seems to at least know physically what is involved with a sex change but portrayed it like it's something people just choose.... as if anyone would :/

He's not exactly Emo Phillips, is he?
I've often wondered at the lack of common sense that I observe in a great many people. Those who take the piss out of me for wearing size 11 wellie boots for example. It's begging for trouble...
I've even had folk poke fun at me for carrying an electric guitar around with me. Honestly, chancing your luck with someone armed with a blunt instrument and six garotting wires has, shall we say, the penthouse available to let...
Big hands. YES! Big reach, too, and I'm only 4kg shy of the heavyweight limit.
Lord, if I ever catch up with him, I'll make sure Icey's on hand with the video recorder. You guys are in for a treat...
No, Herbie, this one's mine... _________________ The Daily Turnout - King of the Throne Room

To all would be comedians..... I think you need to review your career if the only way you can make people laugh is by the school yard bullying of "social, sexual and racial minorities". _________________ Most of the time, most people do what most people do most of the time.

Bill Bailey is a good example of a very funny comedian that doesn't pick on minorities

Bill Bailey is so full of imagination that he doesn't need to pick on anyone. My favourite is Dr Qui (that's right, Dr Who in french... Il voyage dans le tardis, qui est beaucoup plus grand de l'interieur que l'exterieur...)
Can't remember which of you posted about him a few weeks ago, but I dare not go back until I've stopped laughing from the last instalment...
Bill, of course, was born in Somerset. _________________ The Daily Turnout - King of the Throne Room

Bill is a talented musical artist as part troll demonstrates
Ricky just got lucky i think and the 11 o clock show launched him as he was anti politically correct back then
the gag - why give money to oxfam when all those African kids have such swollen bellies - or words to that effect
at least he hired a disabled producer to take the mick out of the disabled - maybe he should now hire a trans researcher _________________ Man [...] must count no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth." yeah, cause bill bailey has never made a trans reference before. Try watching part troll where he's in new york with his mother and her surprise at a '6 foot four black transsexual'. "oh, she's got big hands" "no, she's ah, ummm..."
So yeah. and since when did trans people become so colossally self-important that they can't get made fun of? Don't answer, it's kinda pathetic. the guys ENTIRE ACT is pretending to be a colossal asshole to highlight the absurdity of the people who ARE. it's like criticising american comedian stephen colbert for pretending to be a republican and making absurdist statements about the evils of single mothers and homosexuals. he doesn't hate them, he's PRETENDING. IT'S AN ACT. *sigh*
Apologies, but I just believe that anyone who thinks they can't be made fun of really deserves a reality check. You're not sacred. Nothing is.

yeah the trouble is when you joke about the powerful or the numbered (as in large communities of people with a certain problem, illness or ethnicity) the joke has less force socially speaking
trans people on the other hand are poorly treated socially isolated and can be abused in their communities
and are regularly, this does nothing more than continue this wave of abuse - kick a tran while they are down
does the Sun Newspaper describe anyone else mentioned in his act for example with the same utter contempt as he does - only trans and asylum seekers i thing - and i think there are more of them
its just relentless humiliation - i would love to see the trans gags balanced a little with all the other communities - if we talk about percentages trans are ridiculously over abused compared with any other community and the Alf Garnet argument doesnt cut it really
At the time of Alf Garnet half of London was on fire with racial riots - trans probably couldnt get sufficient numbers together to turn over a single mini
well Islam seems to be increasing sacred - as the recent cartoons demonstrated - the media is scared to death of them and so is ricky gervais if you listen to the first half of his act on his DVD
so theres your answer - its all based on fear
and that same fear is how many trans live their lives
remember Warren Mitchell (Alf Garnet) saying yeah well some people used to shout across the road to me and say WELL DONE MATE GET RID OF ALL THE BUGGERS - he shouted back - you just dont get it do you
and it is those people that will kick a trans teeth in not the chattering classes at a Ricky Gervais Gig _________________ Man [...] must count no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth." if the comedians premise is to mock victimised minorities to highlight how stupid that act is, it hardly very well works if he sticks his act to pinpointing the foibles of middle class conservatives. Not that they don't do that adequately themselves.
| ice maiden wrote: | | trans people on the other hand are poorly treated socially isolated and can be abused in their communities |
That's a truism, of course.
| ice maiden wrote: | | and are regularly, this does nothing more than continue this wave of abuse - kick a tran while they are down |
So you can abuse people, as long as they're not trans? as you mentioned, he makes fun of starving africans, disabled people, midgets, etc. Can you seriously say we're the worst off? How can mocking them to highlight a point be acceptable, but us, no? that's hypocrisy.
| ice maiden wrote: | | does the Sun Newspaper describe anyone else mentioned in his act for example with the same utter contempt as he does - only trans and asylum seekers i thing - and i think there are more of them |
Yes, but the contempt is FALSE. It shows how ridiculous the sun is.
| ice maiden wrote: | | its just relentless humiliation - i would love to see the trans gags balanced a little with all the other communities - if we talk about percentages trans are ridiculously over abused compared with any other community and the Alf Garnet argument doesnt cut it really |
As you said at the beginning, he mocks all the other communities too. this argument is contradictory with your previous.
| ice maiden wrote: | | well Islam seems to be increasing sacred - as the recent cartoons demonstrated - the media is scared to death of them and so is ricky gervais if you listen to the first half of his act on his DVD |
Two wrongs don't make a right. Acting like them makes us just as bad. If we want to be a respected community, it's hardly the way to go, unless you've been reading the prince? Safer to be feared than loved?
| ice maiden wrote: | | so theres your answer - its all based on fear |
Whose fear? This comedian is hardly going to make chavs think twice. I hardly believe they're going to think "Well, ordinarily, I'd let that visible minority be on their way, but I'd watched this illuminating lecture by ricky gervais and I find I now cannot ignore their patently ridiculous nature. I'm going to go and give them a sound beating. That ought to learn them!" Or is it just to make it unacceptable for people to say a bad word against us, no matter why? That's a lot worse in my mind.
| ice maiden wrote: | | and that same fear is how many trans live their lives |
And it's unlikely to change if we demonise, within our community, absolutely everyone who dares to tell a joke about us :O the shock and horror.
| ice maiden wrote: | | remember Warren Mitchell (Alf Garnet) saying yeah well some people used to shout across the road to me and say WELL DONE MATE GET RID OF ALL THE BUGGERS - he shouted back - you just dont get it do you |
Sounds like you're not getting it either. Just instead of saying "ditch all the trannies" you're saying "I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'D SAY THAT TO US, YOU'RE A HORRIBLE BIGOT."
| ice maiden wrote: | | and it is those people that will kick a trans teeth in not the chattering classes at a Ricky Gervais Gig |
Well, if the people who'd agree with his persona aren't watching it, what's your point?
