Transexual's death now treated as murder
By Dan Menhinnitt
Croydon Guardian
26th November 2007
Officers investigating Kellie Telesford's death are now treating it as murder.
Kellie Telesford, a transsexual who had been living as a woman for a number of years, was found strangled at her home in Leander Road, Thornton Heath, on Wednesday.
Police had visited the 40-year-old's home after being contacted by concerned friends.
Detectives are now keen to speak to anyone who had contact with Kellie, born Kayiode Dexter-Telesford, between November 15 and 21.
Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons, from the Homicide and Serious Crime Command who is leading the investigation, said: "We would also like to speak to anyone who knew or who has had a relationship with Kellie to help us build a picture of her lifestyle.
"We know she went to venues popular with the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities, in particular in the Croydon and Brixton area.
"We would also like to speak to anyone who knew or who has had a relationship with Kellie to help us build a picture of her lifestyle. "
"There are several lines of enquiry that we are following, but help from the community is still paramount. I would also like to reassure all parts of the community affected by Kellie's murder that our dedicated team of detectives are committed to finding the person responsible.
"The lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender liaison officers on borough are aware and are acting as a line of communication to and from the investigation team, ensuring any fears can be addressed. It should be stressed though that we have not seen any further incidents similar to Kellie's murder."
Anyone with information should call 020 8721 4205, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

if this person has done it once he or she could do it again
not exactly comforting
the fact she was trans could be coincidence
it is when this sort of thing happens that the police and community realise the poor communications they have with the GLBTI community and the work they should have been doing with them and supporting them may help prevent such crimes taking place
i suppose now they will bring in some 'cracker like' psychologist who knows bugger all about trans people to try and help - i mean even the experts understand very little really _________________ Man [...] must count no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth." Appeal made over transsexual's murder
ITN
27th Nov 2007
Detectives have released pictures of a transsexual who was found strangled to death in her home.
Kellie Telesford, 40, was found in her flat in Thornton Heath, south London on November 21, after friends raised concerns about her welfare.
She was born as a man, named Kayiode Dexter Telesford, but had been living as a woman for several years.
Police have appealed to anyone who had contact with Miss Telesford between November 15 and 21 to come forward.
Detective Chief Inspector Cliff Lyons said: "We would also like to speak to anyone who knew or who has had a relationship with Kellie to help us build a picture of her lifestyle."
He said the help of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community was vital to the investigation. Miss Telesford was known to have frequented popular gay and lesbian night-spots in the Croydon and Brixton areas.
"I would also like to reassure all parts of the community affected by Kellie's murder that our dedicated team of detectives are committed to finding the person responsible," he said.
"It should be stressed though that we have not seen any further incidents similar to Kellie's murder."
Anyone with information on the killing is asked to contact the incident room on 020 8721 4205, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The BBC seem to have managed to run the story - albeit very briefly on Friday - without mentioning anything to do with Kellie Telesford's trans status:
Woman is found strangled in home
A woman has been found strangled at an address in south-east London.
Police found the victim's body in Leander Road, Thornton Heath, on Wednesday evening, officers have revealed.
Detectives believe it is 40-year-old Kellie Telesford, who was formerly known as Kayiode Dexter Telesford.
The Metropolitan Police are treating the death as suspicious and want to speak to anyone who had sexual contact with the victim.

Regrettably, BBC news editorial policy is not carried over into its many seedy comedy and DJ shows, where we remain the butt of derogatory humour - for want, I suppose, of any other minority which can be lampooned without significant repercussion.

their efforts will no doubt be focused on the local gay bars and then shrugging of shoulders
still waiting for their 'liaison' officers to post an appeal here on tzone
i should think confidentiality would be a good idea when mentioning appeals - i mean i should think local trans people must be scared to death _________________ Man [...] must count no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth." Would you invite them to do so? I'd be happy to contact them if you'd like to delegate it. _________________ The Daily Turnout - King of the Throne Room

However, police are still asking anyone who knew Kellie or has

relationship with Kellie to help us build a picture of her lifestyle.
"We know she went to venues popular with the LGBT communities, in
particular in the Croydon and Brixton area.
"There are several lines of enquiry that we are following, but help from
the community is still paramount.
"I would also like to reassure all the communities affected by Kellie's
murder that our dedicated team of detectives are committed to finding
the person responsible.
"The LGBT liaison officers are acting as line of communication to and
from the investigation team, ensuring any fears can be addressed.
"It should be stressed though that we have not seen any further
incidents similar to Kellie's murder.
"Information will be treated sensitively and in the strictest confidence."
