LONDON - Channel 4 is to screen a documentary about the transgender 'Pregnant Man', Thomas Beatie, who made headlines around the world earlier this month when he gave birth to a girl.
The one-hour long documentary will have exclusive access to Thomas Beatie, the first man in the world to give birth.
It will be produced by DCD Media, the independent TV production and distribution group, through its subsidiary September, after it beat four independent production firms to secure the commission.

10/7/2008 - September Films Secures Global Doc Rights To Pregnant Man
DCD Media-owned September Films has snapped up worldwide documentary rights to produce Pregnant Man (1X60'), a major event programme about the first man in the world to give birth. September Films fought off stiff competition from four leading UK indies to secure exclusive documentary access.
Channel 4 has secured rights to broadcast this much sought after documentary special in the UK and distribution company, NBDtv/DCD Media is licensing rights internationally. Deals are close to being finalised in the US and Germany.
In a unique event that has taken the world by storm, September Films has gained exclusive documentary access to Thomas Beatie and his family, telling his tale of a sad childhood, transgender issues as a teenager and how he became the first man in the world to give birth. The documentary will offer a unique insight beginning with the last few emotional days leading up to the birth, through the proud hospital delivery of Thomas and Nancy's baby girl, and finally the return home after the event to see how the couple cope with their new arrival in the glare of the world's media.
The iconic picture of Thomas with facial hair and a man's flat chest above a swollen belly has sparked an ethical debate about transgender rights across the world. Thomas, formerly Tracy, a Hawaiian beauty pageant contestant, says his decision to have a child has been met with discrimination and outright derision by health care professionals -- and even his own family has questioned his actions. But, perhaps most shockingly the Beaties' unborn child has received numerous death threats.
So, what will happen now that the baby has arrived? Will they be able to function as a healthy family unit after all the media attention and ethical dispute?
UK TV rights for Pregnant Man were acquired by Channel 4's deputy head of documentaries, Simon Dickson. Sheldon Lazarus is executive producer for September Films.
Sheldon Lazarus, Creative Director, September Films, said: "This controversial and unique story has made Pregnant Man one of the most sought after stories to film. September Films is gaining a truly global reputation for producing these types of documentaries and handling the subject matter in a responsible and sensitive manner."
Simon Dickson, Deputy Head of Documentaries, added: “"I'm very pleased to be working with September Films again after the huge success of I Am The Elephant Man. They've proved themselves to be first-rate at getting access to the world's most remarkable human interest stories. Plus, the end product is always surprising and compassionate."
