Being someone who rarely goes to the doctors and therefore has no relationship with them in that sense I'd like some advice on what to say / ask for when I see mine next week.

How did everyone tell their doctor and what did you ask for?

Write to your doctor beforehand so that they're already in the picture when you get there.

Quote:
Dear Doctor Watson

I have an appointment with you on Octember 33rd. I wish to discuss gender dysphoria and how I believe I may have a case for a diagnosis.

Please find enclosed a copy of the NHS Direct information on gender dysphoria.

I may ask you for a referral to the local psychiatric team whose responsibility it is to confirm the diagnosis before asking you for a referral to a gender identity clinic at a later date.

Yours sincerely

Shirley Holmes

That should serve your purpose. It will break the ice and maximise the use of the ten minutes that are available to both you and your doctor.

This ploy has worked well for a number of us.

Yes, I agree with Reenie that a letter can be the best way of going about it, and will definitely save you from having to blurt it out - and also give your doctor an opportunity to prepare their coure of action.

I'd recommend hand-delivering it a good few days before the appointment though - oh, and writing Private and Confidential on the envelope.

Good luck!

Dave

As the others have said writing a letter is a great idea and allows you to convey your feelings to your GP before hand so that they know on the day and you don't have to worry about getting across how you feel if you feel overly nervous.

I just told my doctor that I wanted a sex change. My docto was very good about it knew what to do, but she already had experience with this and dealt with it before which may not be the case with some GPs. I didn't know at the time she had experience with this so i suppose I was lucky there.

I had the same issue only a week ago. I got the courage to just come out and tell my doc. he was well cool with it all and is sorting me a referral as we speak. He hadn't had anyone come to him before, but he knew his stuff and knew all the right questions to ask
I know how hard it is, but since speaking to my doc, my confidence has gone through the roof and i'm coming out to new people i know everyday.
