In need of HRT advice

Postby ananimity on Sat Nov 07, 2009 12:42 am

Hi. I need some advice regarding HRT. Like many Americans, I have no health insurance--and little money--so visiting a gp is out of the question at present. I'm a trans woman just starting out, and I'd like advice on which kinds of birth control--which my girlfriend can get cheaply for me at planned parenthood--are best for getting the necessary hormones to begin transitioning. Thanks.

welcome to Tzone.
I am sure that you will get an answer along the lines... Taking hormones without medical supervision is dangerous and can be deadly.
Women who wish to use the oral contraceptive are checked for... Weight... smoking.. as both are very contra with extra hormones and can kill.
It affects the clotting of your blood. It can also affect blood lipids and your liver. All these I am checked for every 3 months without fail by my GP.
The amount in a birth control pill is quite small compared to how much you would need to to suppress Testosterone and leave estrogen in your blood in enough amount to make you transition. For this reason most are also on a second pill that blocks in one way or another .. the action or production of Testosterone.
You would be better advised to use what money you have to rid yourself of any facial hair first as this is the one thing most of us have a long problem with and its effect, once done, are quite impresive. This will also have the benifit to you of helping your head sort if this is what you need without changing so much you cant go on as a guy without surgery to remove breats which I would need after only 8 months of hormones.
Hugz and good luck T
to be yourself when all around need you to be.. so difficult to tell them no and keep faith with the responsibiliies of life.

under the circumstances id suggest you take a look at the Looking Glass leaflet on HRT

http://www.looking-glass.greenend.org.uk/medical.htm#8

AVOID Diane-35 as it is associated with a greater risk of potentially fatal blood clots
Man [...] must count no one but himself; that he is alone, abandoned on earth in the midst of his infinite responsibilities, without help, with no other aim than the one he sets himself, with no other destiny than the one he forges for himself on this earth." - Jean Paul Sartre, 1943

"in order to believe anything with certainty, we must first doubt everything we know."

I used Diane-35 (Dianette, Ginette, etc... 35mcg ethinyl estradiol / 2mg cyproterone acetate) throughout my 4 year transition without a problem.

It is otherwise known as co-cyprindiol.

It will be a problem if you smoke.

It was withdrawn from sale in certain markets because there was an increase in deaths among the young women for whom it was developed (PCOS, hirsutism, acne). I suspect these girls were probably smoking.

I started self-medicating with Dianette and later had it prescribed under supervision of an endocrinologist.
